LEWISTON — Sam White headed a cross by Eric Goitia into the Bates goal in the 49th minute to give Bowdoin College a 1-0 win over the Bobcats in a men’s soccer game Tuesday night at Garcelon Field.
Rainy weather forced the game to be played on the Bobcats’ bad-weather home field for the first time, since its FieldTurf resurfacing and stadium light installation a year ago.
Following a scoreless first half, Goitia carried the ball deep into the right corner in Bates’ end of the field and struck a long cross just past the center of the penalty area. The ball traveled over a Bates defender, but White was there to redirect the ball past Bates goalie Brian Goldberg and into the middle of the net on the right side of the Bates goal for a 1-0 lead. It was White’s fourth goal this season, and Goitia’s first assist.
Junior John Murphy attempted a team-high five of Bates’ 16 shots. Goldberg made six saves for Bates, dropping his record this season to 2-1 in net.

FARMINGTON — Bowdoin College struck for five second-half goals as the Polar Bears put away the University of Maine at Farmington 7-1 in non-conference women’s soccer action Tuesday afternoon.
Ellery Gould established a Bowdoin women’s soccer record for career goals with 39. Gould’s record-setting score, breaking the 27-year-old record held by Marte Holden, came at 48:37 to ignite the Polar Bears’ second-half scoring spree.
Casey Blossom, Carolyn Gorajek, Becky Krakora, Caroline Logan, Molly Popolizio and Alexa Yurick each netted a goal for the Polar Bears.
UMF keeper and Lewiston native Beth Lebel made a leaping attempt on a misplayed ball to save an own goal and snubbed Gould with a diving save to keep the match at 1-1 for the next 20 minutes.
Krakora took advantage of a turnover in the UMF backfield to beat Lebel at 41:02 to give Bowdoin a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Lebel finished with eight saves for the Beavers. Johnson and Maddie Lane split netminding duties, with Lane recording two saves in the second half.
