With the table in front of them containing several dynamite cartridges heavily loaded with nitro-glycerine, and the suggestions of attorneys on both sides that they were heavily loaded and might at any time explode, the members of a drawn jury listened to the case of E. J. Hill of Auburn vs the Libbey-Dingley Co. builders of the Portland and Gray railway. This is a case in which the plaintiff seeks to recover $3,000 damages for the loss of a finger and a thumb from the explosion of a dynamite cartridge while in the employ of the company last September.
50 years ago, 1961
Lewiston’s fire commissioners last night voted to cease entirely the practice of delivering water to families in outlying areas with dry wells.
Fire Chief Roland C. Dumais said the action has become necessary because more and more families are demanding water when their own supply runs low and that what started as a friendly gesture of help to people who were really in dire straits, has mushroomed to the point where several families expect water as a matter of course.
