AUBURN — Richard “Dick” Oscar Stevens, 73, a resident of Oddfellows Rebekahs Home, Auburn, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 3, at the Hospice House with his wife of 50 years by his side.
He was born on his family’s farm in Greene, April 6, 1938, to Albert G. Sr. and Hazel M. Wilkins Stevens. He was always happy to share his stories of life on the farm. Richard attended schools in Greene and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1956. He served his country through the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and as a second lieutenant in the Maine State Guard.
On Oct 7, 1961, Richard married Patricia Ann Wood of Greene at the Universalist Church. One of his greatest accomplishments was being married for 50 years. On Sept. 30, they renewed their vows.
Richard worked for many years in various occupations including metal fabrication at Hamilton & Sons, parts manager at Marcotte Chevrolet, manager of the Kings Way restaurant, owner of Stevens Redemption Center, laborer for several tent and awning companies.
His greatest enjoyment was helping his children with projects, puttering and dubbing around the house. Richard was a proud member of several organizations including a life member of VFW Post 1603 in Auburn, life member of American Legion Post 158 in Lisbon, past president and treasurer of FOE Dirigo Aerie 618 of Lewiston, Masonic Tranquil Lodge 29 AF & AM of Auburn and Androscoggin Grange No. 8 of Greene. He attended East Auburn Baptist Church and greatly enjoyed The Event and Christmas Spectacular productions.
He was fondly remembered as “the balloon man” at his daughter’s dance recitals making sure that every balloon fell and all the children laughed. Also remembered with great love as “Uncle Dickie” to so many nieces and nephews.
He was always available to help his children build, fix, repair ANYTHING … jack-of-all-trades and master of none. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandsons with all his heart. Making his famous silver dollar pancakes for all his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia; his children, Annette Cox and her husband, William, of Kentucky, along with their extended family, Synthia, Jennifer and their five children, Michael Stevens of Topsham, Alma-Lea Pace Coffren and her husband, Colin, of Lisbon; his grandchildren, Patricia Stevens of Leeds, Stephanie Stevens of Kansas, Richard Stevens of Lewiston, Megan Posik and her husband, Charlie, of Lisbon and Brittany and Cassandra Pace of Lisbon; two great-grandsons, Cole and Colt; three brothers, Albert Jr. and his wife, Beverly, of Sabattus, Robert and his wife, Beverly, of Sabattus and Clifford “Buzzy” and his wife, Dianne, of Monmouth; a sister, Edna Prince and her husband, Robert, of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters in-law, Estella “Peggy” Stevens and Maxine Stevens; and two aunts, Mary Hurd of Sabattus and Eva Davenport of Wayne.
He was predeceased by brothers, Walter and Frank and sister, Eleanor, all of Greene; and a sister-in-law, Jacqueline “Jackie” Stevens of Sabattus.
The family would like to thank everyone at Oddfellows Rebekahs Home for giving Richard a few months of exciting and memorable activities and to The Hospice House of Auburn for allowing our family to laugh and remember the days on the farm for him to hear and share in.
