A Cumberland County deputy sheriff got a special kind of training this week when someone broke into his unmarked car and stole a firearm and other police items from the trunk.

It happened in Knoxville, Tenn., where the deputy is staying while attending a 10-week training program. The deputy, who has not been named, was living in a gated community when the theft occurred, police said. The community is part of the University of Tennessee campus.

Sometime early Wednesday morning, police said, the thief or thieves broke into the cruiser, stealing the deputy’s Glock .40-caliber handgun, photo identification, badge, camera equipment, flashlight and assorted personal items, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department news release.
