On Nov. 8, Mainers will have the opportunity, and the privilege, to cast votes in the 2011 election. This year, a very important question is on the ballot which will require a “yes” or “no” answer. I am hoping the majority will vote “yes.”

The issue at hand is Election Day voter registration, something Maine has had for almost 40 years without any significant problem. There is a great tradition in Maine of voter participation and involvement in local government. Why not keep this vibrant tradition alive by continuing to permit residents to both register and vote on Election Day?

Same-day voter registration is of paramount importance to older voters. Those with mobility issues or transportation concerns would still have an opportunity to vote. Traditionally, older Americans are the most active voters of any age group and this is certainly true in Maine. Voter participation should be encouraged in any way possible, not made harder for citizens to register and vote.

The AARP has long been a supporter of encouraging people to vote and of any voting system that makes the act of voting easy and accessible. The current legislation clearly is contrary to that philosophy. In fact, it’s taking a system that was working well and turning it into one fraught with difficulty.

The voter registration process has been both simple and efficient. Let’s keep it that way.
