FRYEBURG — Rain and cold weather gave the Fryeburg Fair a slow start, but the weekend’s heat and sun boosted attendance to a record high Sunday.
Fair secretary June Hammond said the total paid attendance was 160,836, down from 2010 by about 10,000. Hammond said the actual attendance is probably about double that, as exhibitors and children under 12 get in free.
The fair was packed on the weekend, with temperatures into the low 80s. About 28,000 attended on Sunday, which Hammond said was a record high for the final Sunday of the fair.
Another 40,000 on Saturday, an uptick from 2010, added up to a successful weekend.
“We rebounded well,” Hammond said. “It was a beautiful weekend.”
Hammond said she believes the weather was the main culprit for 2011, slightly-lower attendance. The number of campers was about the same as last year.
The Fryeburg Fair ran from Oct. 2 to Oct. 9 this year. The 2012 fair is set to begin on Sept. 30.
