Mongolia at WLU

AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union will meet at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St., at 2 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 13. The speaker will be Andrew Cullen. He will talk about his experience in rapidly changing Mongolia during his four years as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Eastern Star meeting

AUBURN — Pine Cone Chapter 26 Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St.

The chapter will be honoring past and present Grand Representatives. All Eastern Star members are welcome. Pine Cone has the traveling emblem “Star.”

Haunted house

AUBURN — The Drama Clubs from Edward Little High School, Lewiston High School and St. Dominic Academy along with the Community Little Theatre will host the Great Falls High School Haunted House on Oct. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 60 High St.

The haunted house will be open for children under 12 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Admission is $5.

For children over 12 and adults, the hours are 6 to 11 p.m. Admission is $10.

Knights supper

AUBURN — The Andy Valley Knights of Columbus, Council 8742, will hold a bean and American chop suey supper from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in the basement of St. Louis Church, Third Street. $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. AUBURN — The Auburn Fire Department at 550 Minot Ave. will hold a free open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

LEWISTON — Lewiston Fire Department will hold a fire prevention open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2 College St. with “Sparky” the fire dog, balloons, snacks and children activities.

The Emergency Management Agency will be there as well as the Cobra Hazmat Team, emergency response command vehicle and the animal rescue team and pet trailer.

Herbs and healing

AUBURN — The second class in the Nature’s Medicine Chest series on herbs and healing, with certified herbalist Jane Kuntz, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Auburn Adventist Community Center, 316 Minot Ave.

YARMOUTH — North Yarmouth Historical Society will hold their fall Soup and Cider Day from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Old Town House on Route 9, North Yarmouth.

Hand cranked cider, soup and home baked goodies, provided by volunteers, will be available.

Altered Barbies

AUBURN — Central Maine Community College’s Rainbow Alliance has announced the Altered Barbie contest. Rainbow Alliance is holding a display at the college for the month of October, which is Gay and Lesbian History month. During the second half of the month, the theme will be gender expression and stereotypes.

The group is seeking Barbie or Ken dolls (or create your own) to be altered in the artist’s perspective of a stereotype or a form of gender expression.

The person who does the best job at transforming his or her doll will win $50, with their doll presented in the lead spot for the display along with the winner’s name and a possible piece in CMCC’s newsletter. To participate in the contest,  contact Paul Cote Jr. via email at [email protected].

Auburn Art Club

LEWISTON — The Auburn Art Club will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church under the direction of president Bonnie Ross.

The speaker will be photographer Jose Leiva. He is currently a photojournalist for the Lewiston Sun Journal where his photographs of people, places, events and natural beauty appear frequently.

Prior to coming to Lewiston, Leiva honed his talents in various states as well as in Italy, Paris and Spain. He adopted as his motto a quote from the famous artist Michaelangelo: “Ancora, imparo,” which translates to “I am still learning.”

The hostess for the meeting will be Ellie Brockway, chairwoman, assisted by Ruth Farnsworth, Jill Jones and Lucille Oldham.

Posture screenings

AUBURN — In celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, St. Mary’s Center for Physical Rehabilitation will offer free posture screenings from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 17, at their location at the St. Mary’s Medical Building on 15 Gracelawn Road.

Each screening will last between 15 and 20 minutes. The posture screen will include a photo that the participant will take home so that they can see what their posture looks like. The therapist will assist participants to get into a good posture so they can see what it feels like. There will be education on what good posture is, the impacts of poor posture and some general postural exercises.

Long-term care

LEWISTON — The Maine Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program will hold a community listening session with Maine seniors, family caregivers and consumers of long-term care services from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 17, at Seniors Plus, 8 Falcon Road.

The purpose of the program is to hear about experiences and ideas concerning access to long-term care services, gaps in services, how services could be improved, what is needed to support independence in remaining at home, top quality-of-life concerns and what physicians can do to better support health and care.

This session is being held with support from the Maine Health Access Foundation.

Paranormal at WLU

AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County will host a free presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Horatio G. Foss mansion, 19 Elm St., that will delve into the study of paranormal experiences.

The Maine Chapter of River Cities Paranormal Society will discuss their experiences investigating and documenting claims of paranormal activity. It is the hope of RCPS Maine that their research will create a better understanding of paranormal phenomena.

The team relies solely on scientific methods and equipment during investigations, and they approach each case objectively. They do not try to prove a location is haunted, but instead try to find logical explanations for what is occurring.

WLU’s goal in offering this presentation is to fulfill its mission “to further the intellectual, cultural and educational advancement of its members and the community.” Light refreshments and street parking available.

Cancer fatigue

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a free workshop to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Fighting Cancer Fatigue” will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at CMMC, 12 High St., in conference room H.

Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common side effects of cancer and its treatments. The exact reason for cancer fatigue is unknown. CRF may be related to both the disease process and treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Learn about cancer related fatigue and techniques for safely becoming more active, which can help one feel energetic and stay active. Led by Nate Littlefield, CMMC Wellness Center supervisor.

Prior college credit

LEWISTON — The University of Southern Maine’s Office for Prior Learning Assessment will offer free workshops which will discuss options on how to earn college level credit for one’s prior learning experiences.

Information sessions will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College, 51 Westminster St., or from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at USM’s Portland campus in room 213 Abromson Center.

Research has shown that people with bachelor’s degrees have higher starting salaries and lower unemployment rates than those with no college degree. The purpose of these workshops is to explain how individuals may earn academic credit for knowledge gained from outside the classroom. The workshops will explain how to turn past or current work experiences into college credit, which often decreases the amount of time it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree.
