DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am having difficulty finding Eggo brand syrup in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Any ideas as to where it can be purchased? Thanks in advance. — G.L.G., recykaler@earthlink.net

ANSWER: Sun Spots went to the Kellogg’s website and used the “where to buy” link. According to this, there are no stores actively selling that syrup in the L-A area. You can buy it online (Amazon, Walgreens, etc.). The site also says Hannaford will special order it for you.

Anytime you can’t find something in a store, Sun Spots always recommends checking with the manager. Stores want happy customers and often will special order for you, although you may have to buy in quantity. More than once Sun Spots has bought an entire case of something.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: It’s been 10 years since a student at Bates College started the Lewiston-Auburn chapter of Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit organization established by his mother in Washington, D.C., created to assist those in need of help in maintaining their homes.

In the last 10 years, thanks to the undying dedication of the RTLA Board members, local businesses and caring individuals, more than 50 homes have been renovated for some of our neighbors who otherwise would not have been able to make the repairs themselves. From painting, to building steps, to repairing roofs, to installing water heaters, whatever it takes that the volunteers are qualified to do and donations allow, it’s done.

It’s Rebuilding Together’s ongoing mission to help homeowners stay in their homes by providing labor and materials to repair the homes of those who cannot afford to do so themselves. That’s why we’re here. And that’s why we’ll continue to do what we do as long as we receive the funds and volunteers that we need.

Without volunteer businesses and individuals, we never would have been able to make renovations to seven houses in the area this year. Our heroes include Almighty Waste, Androscoggin Valley Board of Realtors, Bates College, Central Maine Orthopaedics, FinePrint Printing & Graphics, Hahnel Bros. Co., Isaacson & Raymond, P.A., JMB Construction, LLC, Katharine Stevens, Lewiston Housing Authority, Lewiston Paint & Wallpaper, Lowes, Maine Association of Realtors, Nason Mechanical Systems, Northeast Bank, Olympic Paints, Precision Builders, RE/MAX River Cities, Sam’s Italian Foods, St. Mary’s Health System, Sun Journal, Turner Publishing, Twin City Times and Varsity Lettering.

We’d like to extend an extra special thank-you to the Androscoggin Valley Board of Realtors for naming RTLA the recipient of the proceeds of this year’s golf tournament fundraiser. Their hard work has provided finances that will help us do even more renovations in the future.

RTLA would also like to thank Mike Grimmer, the president of our local chapter, for his many years of service. Mike left Maine to accept a new position in Massachusetts but promises to come back to participate in Rebuilding Day 2012. We are pleased to announce that George Greenwood of RE/MAX River Cities has agreed to serve as the new president of RTLA. — Board of Directors, Rebuilding Together L/A

ANSWER: Sun Spots has often had inquiries from elderly or disabled people who are looking for help fixing up their homes. RTLA is one source of assistance. Sun Spots will let readers know when RTLA is accepting applications.
