It would be easy for the male-dominated St. Dom’s golf squad to overlook teammate Amanda Turcotte.

She doesn’t hit the ball as far as the team’s top players, she plays from different tees and, well, she’s a girl.

But that hasn’t happened at all. Quite the opposite, actually.

“They’re the reason, the guys on the team, I’ve really learned as much as I have and gotten better,” Turcotte said. “The biggest thing I’ve improved is my consistency, and it’s definitely because of them.”

Turcotte, now a senior, qualified for the girls’ state individual tourney at the MVC qualifying tournament two weeks back with an 88 at a difficult Natanis Golf Club track. This weekend, she’s aiming for the top 10 in the state competition.

“I’m hoping I can shoot in the mid-80s,” Turcotte said. “I’m a little nervous about it, especially on the back nine there, but I’m just going go in and focus on the times I’ve done my best. I’m really excited.”

Turcotte won’t be the only Saints golfer vying for a spot in the top 10 this weekend.

Zack Deblois, Anthony Fagone, Joe Bryant and Danny Nadeau all qualified for the individual tournament, as did Tyler Foster and Taylor Morang of Winthrop. Foster finished tied for second at the qualifier with Jordan Jones of Wiscasset, two shots back of Madison’s Seth Sweet.

In Class A, Ben Morton and Cam Letourneau of Oxford Hills, which also qualified for the team championships, will represent the Vikings this weekend. Cameron Marquis of Lewiston and Drew Ferrari of Mt. Blue will also compete for the individual title at Natanis.

In a culmination of a solid four-year career at Oak Hill, Alexis Priest will again compete in the girls’ tournament, alongside Turcotte and Oxford Hills’ Briana Morris.
