JAY — Regional School Unit 73 is still looking for contractor bids for snowplowing and sanding this year.

The district hasn’t received a tremendous response from newspaper ads seeking bids for snow removal and sanding, Superintendent Bob Wall said. There has been some interest but he would like to see more.

The district encompasses Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls. The schools included in the bid process are Spruce Mountain High School South, the area around the bus/maintenance building, middle school, and Cedar Street Educational Complex, all in Livermore Falls.

The Livermore Elementary School and the adjacent church parking lot used by the school for parking on Gibbs Mill Road in Livermore are also included.

In Jay, it would be the roadways starting at Route 4 leading to Spruce Mountain High School North and Spruce Mountain Middle School, the elementary school and bus garage. It would include all parking areas within the complex.

All bidders can submit offers on one or both areas, Wall said.

The bidder would need to agree to plow and/or sand critical areas by 6 a.m. And, if necessary, driveways and sidewalks will be plowed and sanded prior to 2 p.m. dismissal time, according to the bid specifications.

During stormy days when school is in session, snow should never be allowed to accumulate greater than 2 inches in depth, plowing and sanding will be necessary to insure safe access and exiting, the specs state.

Areas where snow needs to be hauled out must be done as necessary or at the district’s request. The bidder also would agree to do all sanding with truck-mounted automatic sanders, and all sand used will contain at least 100 pounds of salt per cubic yard.

Contractors can arrange site visits to the area and plowing and sanding requirements prior to bidding. Those can be arranged by maintenance supervisor Ken Vining, who may be reached at 897-6722. Bid packets are also available at the Superintendent of Schools Office on the Cedar Street Education Center in Livermore Falls.

The district reserves the right to reject any or all bids.
