LEWISTON — Thrilled with the community’s overwhelming response to this summer’s new Sunday Farmers Market at Bates Mill 5, the organizers of the Lewiston Farmers Market are preparing for the final Sunday Market day Oct. 16. The popular Bates Mill Sunday Farmers Market has grown to more than 20 vendors and has included entertainment, demonstrations and even free chair massages.

While the Kennedy Park “stop and shop” farmers market will continue through November every Tuesday from 2 to 4:30 p.m., the Sunday farmers market will hold their final event for this season on Sunday. The end of season event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bates Mill 5 parking lot and include entertainment, a raffle to win a basket of farmers market products, and the farmers and artisans the community has come to know and enjoy throughout the season.

Eating locally grown and raised in-season foods is good for health, the environment, as well as the local economy. Market organizers point out that “as the summer season ends, customers can take this opportunity to stock up for winter and can get information on saving and storing food at the market’s information booth.”

Plans for The Lewiston Winter Farmers Market are underway. The winter market will be held monthly, every third Thursday, November through May, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, 208 Bates St. The winter market offers seasonal produce, meat, dairy products, art, chocolate, cooking demonstrations, music and more. Anyone interested in performing at the winter farmers market in their acoustic music series should contact Kristen Wheatley at lewistonfarmersmarket@gmail.com.
