To unveil memorial
LEWISTON — The Lewiston Fire Department Local 785 will unveil the Fallen Firefighters Memorial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Lewiston Central Fire Station. All are welcome. A light lunch will be served.
Couponing is topic
AUBURN — “Couponing 101: Pinching Pennies, Saving Bills” will be offered at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.
Shannon Bissonnette will share her coupon successes, tips and strategies. She is the creator of the Maine Coupon Clipper site, which can be found on Facebook.
According to NCH Marketing Services, in the first half of this year, consumers redeemed 1.75 billion coupons for a savings of $2 billion. That’s an 18 percent increase from the same period in 2009, when packaged-goods companies began stepping up discounts to spur demand, the Deerfield, Ill.-based firm said.
Packaged-goods companies and retailers typically hand out more coupons during hard times. Last year, businesses issued a record $332 billion worth, according to NCH Marketing Services.

Workshop for kids
LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free workshop to children affected by cancer themselves, or who have a family member affected by cancer. “Clay Play for Kids” will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.
The program is a creative, educational and hands-on workshop that will use clay to allow kids a chance to use many of their senses to help them understand what cancer is, what it looks like and how it works. The workshop is ideal for elementary and middle school children, parents and caregivers. All are welcome.

Society to meet
NEW GLOUCESTER — The New Gloucester Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road.
The program will be about Moses Greenleaf, New Gloucester native and famous Maine geographer, presented by Holly Hurd. Members and the public are invited. Refreshments will be served. A business meeting will follow.
