SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield police say a 23-year-old city man has died after being shot near a local nightclub.

A police spokesman says officers were called to Club Illusions on Worthington Street early Sunday morning and found 23-year-old Devada Wannamaker on the ground in the alley with at least one gunshot wound.

He was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2 a.m.

Police say medics and officers found a loaded gun in Wannamaker’s pants and marijuana and crack cocaine packaged for sale, and are investigating the homicide as potentially drug-related.

Officers were looking for witnesses Sunday and had not announced any arrests.

Wannamaker’s shooting is Springfield’s 17th homicide of 2011.
