The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed new guidelines that would eliminate potatoes from school breakfasts and drastically reduce the amount of potatoes served in lunches.

Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe have called the plan flawed and misguided. They joined Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colorado, in filing an amendment to an appropriations bill that would bar USDA from implementing the rule.

Snowe says she supports an increase in fruits and vegetables available in school cafeterias, but believes the crackdown on potatoes goes too far.

Collins, who picked potatoes as a girl in Maine, agrees that while french fries aren’t a great food choice for children, potatoes can be very healthy when cooked in other ways.
