CANTON — The chairman of the Canton Dam Committee reported Monday that failure to find bedrock at the predicted level and high water levels have slowed construction of Lake Anasagunticook dam on Whitney Brook.
Malcolm Ray, who heads the committee, said a revised design by Kleinschmidt engineer Kevin Colley has been accepted after the contractor failed to find bedrock 10 feet below the predicted level. The new design calls for filling the excavation with concrete-like “flowable fill” and raising the height of the stream bed. Sheet piling has been driven to form the dam abutments.
The project is still expected to be completed by December, the engineer said.
In other business at the meeting, it was reported that Sue Gammon secured more than $10,000 worth of trees for use in landscaping and the nature trail. This, and other contributions of time and material by volunteers, will count toward the in-kind match required for some of the grants for these projects.
The town is seeking a grant to cover the cost of material for a bridge over Whitney Brook to allow hikers, snowmobilers and ATV riders to travel between the parking lot on Route 140 and the boat launch and trails on the other side. The bridge will be constructed by volunteers.
