PARIS — The Oxford County Commission on Wednesday submitted a 2012 budget recommendation that is $223,000 less than requested by departments.
The $5,663,323 spending plan, hammered out after five hours, would still exceed the statutory tax levy limit by about $240,000, according to County Administrator Scott Cole. Even if the Budget Committee approves the lower budget submitted by commissioners, the committee will still have to vote to raise the tax levy.
“That’ll be one of the questions posed at the budget meeting,” Cole said Wednesday.
The departmental budget request comes to $5,885,946, up from the $5.6 million budget passed last year. Taxation would be offset by non-tax revenues of $1,717,760, but the county’s jail tax is $1,228,757, resulting in a projected 2012 tax levy of $5,396,943.
The commissioners’ budget includes cuts to the Registry of Deeds East, the Sheriff’s Office, Civil Process, employee benefits and capital reserves. The capital reserve cut is a $20,000 cut to the $40,000 the Probate Court requested for electronic archiving of records.
The Budget Committee will meet to discuss and pass the 2012 budget on Nov. 15.
