LEWISTON — The ASPCA’s $100K Challenge is winding down, but the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society still needs your help. The three shelters that have increased lives saved by at least 300 and that receive the most votes between Oct. 17 and 31 will be announced as finalists for the $25,000 Community Engagement Award.
People can vote once each day by going to www.SavingPetsInMaine.org and clicking on the orange circle that says “vote.” Then choose “Maine – Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.”
During August, the first month of the challenge, GAHS saved 185 more lives than during the same month in 2010. The shelter gained second place across the nation and first place in our region, earning a $5,000 Fast Start Grant by ASPCA.
After month two, September, the shelter placed fifth nationally, but maintained the top spot in the region.
Currently, 938 lives have been saved. The goal is 974 lives that must be saved to be eligible for prizes, but the shelter is aiming for 1000 or more adopted animals during the contest period.
The shelter is offering the following adoption programs running until the end of the month:
Magical Mutt Mondays — Half of the adoption fee is being waived for mutts 6 months in age or older. They are also being sent home with a free 44-pound bag of food.
Wacky Wednesdays — Oct. 26 is Halloween at GAHS. The adoption fee of any cat or dog 6 months in age or older will be waived for people who dress as a Halloween ghoul.
Fall for a Feline — Throughout the entire month of October, the shelter is offering zero percent down on all “Certified Pre-owned Adult Cats.” Adoptions fees are waived for cats 6 months in age or older.
“Canine Cat!-astrophe” Adoption Event — With the aim of emptying the shelter of all adoptable cats and dogs, GAHS will open at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, and will remain open until all animals have found homes, or the clock strikes midnight. Adoption fees will be waived on all adult cats and dogs all day and special discounts will be available for puppies and kittens.
Sunday, Oct. 30 – If there are animals left for adoption after the midnight closing, the shelter will offer amazing adoption deals that are currently being kept secret. Visit www.Facebook.com/gahumane for the latest gossip.
