LITCHFIELD — The Kennebec Land Trust will dedicate two new conservation parcels, covering 119 new acres with trails, on Sunday, Oct. 23. The public is welcome.
The 44-acre Seawards Mills Stream Conservation Area was donated to KLT by Elizabeth Cole, a long time Vassalboro resident, in June 2011. The conservation area includes woodlands, 3,800 feet of undeveloped frontage on historic Seawards Mills Stream and 15 acres of agricultural fields which are leased to Vassalboro farmer, Dana Suga.
The 75-acre Holman Conservation Area on the Upper Pond Road in Litchfield, is south of KLT’s 117-acre Webber-Rogers Farmstead conservation easement. Helen Holman donated this conservation easement to KLT in May. The property features early successional woodlands and wetlands with valuable wildlife habitat bordered by Maggoty Meadow Brook. Since purchasing this land in 2005, Holman has filled and leveled gravel pits and worked to restore a landscape where timber, gravel and loam had been removed. Holman still owns this property; her conservation easement with KLT protects important wildlife habitat and other natural resources. The easement also grants public access for low impact recreational activities on a network of trails, and prohibits residential and commercial development.
