Each month students are asked to bring in the requested nonperishable food item and at the end of the month a class will help in loading and getting the items to the food pantry.

The response from students and parents has been enthusiastic and it couldn’t come at a better time as the food pantry is in need. The food pantry has been in desperate need of donations for the past year. Due to the economy, donations have been low at the food pantry as well as at Good Shepherd Food-Bank, where most pantries get much of their food.

A parent, Susi Legere, approached the school about starting a donation program that was fun and involved the kids more. Her son, Nate, volunteers with his grandmother at the food pantry and they knew of its great need. Containers for the donations are setup at the entrance to the school with a poster board tracking numbers of donations each month. This has gotten the students (and parents) more motivated as they see it everyday, several times a day.

This month the youngest class, preschool, helped carry and load the boxes and bags of cereal. Mr. and Mrs. Byam, who run the food pantry, took time to talk with the preschoolers about the mission of the food pantry and the importance of helping others. September’s food drive brought in dozens of boxes and bags of cereal with additional canned food items which the preschoolers were eager to pack and load.

Nonperishable items can be donated through Holy Savior Church and School or by contacting Sue Byam at 364-8603.
