FARMINGTON — A Wilton man faces charges after speeding down Front Street on Wednesday night and crashing into the Hippach Field fence, Farmington Police Chief Jack Peck said Thursday.

Daniel Herrin, 19, of Wilton was given a summons on charges of criminal speed and driving to endanger by Maine State Police Trooper Jed Malcore.

Riding with Herrin were Samantha McArthur, 18, Evan McArthur, 19, both from Farmington and a 16-year-old juvenile from Farmington, Malcore said.

Herrin and his passengers were wearing seat belts and escaped injury, although one complained of shoulder pain. No one was transported to the hospital, Malcore said Thursday.

Each of the four received a summons on a charge of criminal mischief from Farmington police officer Ted Neil after a resident showed up at the scene saying the occupants in the vehicle had just smashed his mailbox, Malcore said. The teens admitted to smashing three mailboxes between New Vineyard and Farmington, he said.

Malcore said he was traveling north on Front Street at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday when he saw a car traveling in the opposite lane speed around the curve and swerve into his lane and back into the opposite lane. Malcore said he never saw the driver hit the brakes, even though there were pedestrians on the side of the road near the tavern waiting to cross Front Street.

Malcore said he clocked Herrin’s 1997 Oldsmobile by radar at 68 mph in a 25-mph zone.

Malcore turned around to stop the vehicle but by the time he reached the intersection next to McDonald’s, the vehicle had already crossed the Main Street intersection and crashed into the Hippach Field fence, he said.

Herrin’s vehicle received extensive damage to the front and was towed from the scene, Peck said.

Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue and NorthStar ambulance service assisted at the scene.

Parks and Recreation Director Steve Shible has talked with fence companies and expects to receive estimates to repair the fence, Town Manager Richard Davis said late Thursday.
