Years ago, the Maine Legislature passed a law requiring that a car’s headlights be on whenever the windshield wipers are being used full time.

I find it strange that so many Maine drivers don’t seem to be aware of that law. I would say that about 10 percent of Maine drivers do not use their headlights when their windshield wipers are on.

I realize that some drivers feel they don’t need the lights to see, but what they don’t seem to realize is that other drivers might not see their car before it is too late to stop. Light-colored cars, especially light gray, are not very visible on a foggy, rainy day. I hope those drivers have good life insurance.

I can understand that out-of-state drivers might not be aware of the law, but common sense should tell anyone that it is much safer to have the headlights on in inclement weather.
