LIVERMORE FALLS — With a playoff berth on the line, Spruce Mountain lived up to the challenge in a Class B Campbell Conference football game at Griffen Field on Friday night.

Bill Calden led the way by rushing for 154 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Zach Bonnevie threw for a touchdown in the first half and the defense was stout in a 23-12 victory against Fryeburg.

Spruce Mountain (4-4) survived a rugged early schedule and turned things around throughout October to earn a postseason spot

“We hung in there the entire game,” Spruce Mountain coach Mark Bonnevie said. “Our offense played tough, and we got the win that will put us in the playoffs.”

Bill Calden broke off tackle and sprinted 19 yards for a touchdown on the opening possession of the game. Brandon Hodges kicked the extra point.

Fryeburg responded with its own 1-yard touchdown, but missed the PAT.

The Phoenix established field position by pinning Fryeburg on its own 6-yard line. A bad snap on a punt hit the crossbar, and Alwayne Uter recovered the ball in the end zone for a Spruce Mountain touchdown.

Calden had several runs of 10 or more yards and quickly credited the blocking by tackles Josh Wilcox and Kyle Souther, guards Travis Wiillams and Jake Richards, and center Kye Ainsley.

“We definitely needed this win,” Calden said. “If not, then a loss would have meant we would have needed help. This secures it.”

Bonnevie completed 3 of 8 passes for 40 yards in the first half. Ben Keene caught a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Fryeburg (2-6) was led by a strong running game by Devine Dockerry (90 yards, 15 rushes) and the passing attack by QB Andrew Roscoe (12 of 29, 124 yards). Ryan Buzzell caught a 21-yard TD. The Raider receivers constantly ran behind the Phoenix secondary. Fryeburg hurt itsef by committing penalties twice in the red zone and a holding penalty negated a touchdown.

The well-disciplined Phoenix defense was led by Richards, Souther, Wilcox, Hodges and Tommy Lee. Nate Shink intercepted a pass and a snap went through the end zone for a safety.
