On Nov. 8, Mainers will have the opportunity to vote to restore Election Day voter registration to the state, a right the state Legislature took away from the public during the last legislative session.

I grew up in the civil rights era, watching incredible scenes on television of people getting beaten, attacked by dogs, even killed, for claiming the right to vote. They persisted in their efforts, despite the danger, because they knew that voting is essential to citizenship in our democracy.

Because of that history, it horrifies me to see lawmakers placing roadblocks between people and their exercising this fundamental right.

Being able to register to vote on Election Day makes it possible for more people to vote. Any law that excludes people from voting is bad for democracy.

I support a “yes” vote on Question 1.
