WILTON — The advantages for the town to resurrect a defunct conservation commission were recently outlined for the Board of Selectmen.

The board then asked presenter, Nancy Prince, to retrieve and review materials from the previous commission to ensure it covered what she described as advantages for bringing the commission back. Prince previously served and will again but wants the board to encourage younger residents to participate.

The advantages include identifying open space for recreational activities, protecting wildlife habitat, preserving agriculture as well as scenic beauty, she told the board.

One future activity for a board-appointed commission could include enhancing the area around the outlet of the lake, something she hears visitors frequently remark about, she said.

She urged the board to move in a direction already under way as she acknowledged the work of groups and individuals including the Tyngtown Club, Betty Shibles, John and Corey Black for their efforts to beautify the town.

Prince detailed the efforts of two other strong conservation groups in town, the Foothills Land Conservancy and Friends of Wilton Lake (FOWL) to preserve and protect properties in town and around the lake.

The different groups collaborate and provide more ideas to protect the resources, Conrad Heeschen told the board.

Selectman Russell Black said a conservation commission could help identify priorities and town conservation properties and other board members agreed.
