LEWISTON — Christo James Simones, 90, of Auburn passed away Monday, Oct. 24, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Lewiston, Dec. 18, 1920. He lived on Lincoln Street near the old Greek Church before moving to Auburn in his early teens, where he resided the rest of his life.

He attended Edward Little High School before going to work in the mills to help support his family until enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served two years in Italy, and was wounded in combat in 1944, receiving the Purple Heart.

He married Pauline Danforth in Lewiston on June 8, 1947, and they raised four wonderful children. They enjoyed dancing, especially jitterbugging. He worked as a mailman for the Auburn Post Office delivering mail faithfully to all his customers through blizzards, floods, and hurricanes covering almost every route in Auburn for 38 years before retiring in 1983.

In his retirement, he enjoyed watching the Red Sox, playing golf at Prospect Hill Golf Course and skiing at Sunday River with his children and grandchildren until the ripe old age of 83.

In his final years, he got to see his beloved Red Sox win two World Series. He loved his children and grandchildren more than anything else in the world and he took great interest in everything they did. He was a caring, compassionate man, who would literally give you the shirt off his back. He loved everyone and made friends everywhere.
