FARMINGDALE — Nat Crocker found the net with 17:57 left in regulation to lift Hall-Dale to a 2-1 victory over Dirigo in a Western Class A quarterfinal boys’ soccer game Wednesday.

Crocker gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage in the first frame with the first of his two tallies. Chad Snowman scored for the Cougars (11-4) with a well-timed assist from T.J. Frost.

Sam Shepherd made five saves for Hall-Dale, while Caleb Turner was outstanding between the posts for Dirigo with an impressive 14 saves.

Vinalhaven 3, Buckfield 2
VINALHAVEN —  Despite a second-half rally by Buckfield that nearly tied the contest, Vinalhaven received early tallies and hung on for a 3-2 victory in a Western Class D boys’ soccer quarterfinal game Wednesday.

Ben Carrington gave Vinalhaven a 2-0 lead in the first frame, while Steve Osgood’s goal provided a 3-0 cushion at the break.

The Bucks rallied for two goals after halftime as Austin Dooley and Trevor Averill each found the net. On at least two occasions, Buckfield almost tied it up with close shots.

Trey Warren made an impressive 21 saves for Vinalhaven. Calvin Downey turned aside five shots for Buckfield.

Girls’ soccer

Tilton 4, Hebron 0
HEBRON — The Hebron Academy girls’ soccer squad was overpowered Wednesday, falling victim to an aggressive Tilton team, 4-0, in a prep school tilt.

In the first half, the two teams were scoreless for 20 minutes before Tilton’s center midfielder found the net from 35 yards away. Tilton followed up with two more goals before the half to take a 3-0 advantage into the break.  

Hebron had good possession of the ball in each half of the play, but Tilton’s defense played well to thwart the Lumberjack attack. Tilton added one more goal in the final 12 minutes.

Hebron junior Molly Bloomingdale played her first game in goal, making 16 saves on 26 shots.

Field hockey

Tilton 4, Hebron 3 (OT)

HEBRON — Ashley Chonopoulos punched in the winning goal in overtime to steer Tilton School past Hebron Academy with a 4-3 victory in a field hockey game Wednesday.

Chonopoulos scored two goals and added an assist while teammate Gabby Fountain also dropped in a pair of goals.

Hannah Hearn punched in a pair of goals for Hebron, and teammate Haley Grimmer added the tying goal in the second half.

Field hockey

Bates 1, Colby 0
WATERVILLE—  Polly Merck scored about four minutes into the second half and goaltender Becca Otley earned the shutout as the Bates College field hockey team closed the season with a 1-0 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Wednesday at Bill Alfond Field.
 
Bates finishes up at 4-10 overall and 2-8 in the conference, while Colby also closes out the season at 4-10 overall and was 1-9 in the league.
 
Merck scored at 39:02 in a scramble in front of the net. Michelle Burt made four saves for the Mules.

Men’s soccer

Colby 3, Bates 2
WATERVILLE — The Colby College men’s soccer team will head to the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs for the third straight year after holding on for a 3-2 victory over rival Bates College Wednesday.
 
The Mules (7-6-1 overall, 3-6-1 NESCAC) will be the eighth seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will visit top-seeded Amherst College for a quarterfinal game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Bates finishes the season at 4-10 overall and 0-10 in conference play.
 
After a scoreless first half, the Mules appeared to take over the game with two goals in a span of 1:16. Eric Barthold, one of six Colby seniors playing their final home games, scored on a header off a beautiful cross from the left side by first-year Jon Stronach at 57:16.
 
Bates refused to give up and scored when Tyler Grees had a fine cross from the right side for a diving header by Ethan Kass for the Bobcats’ first goal at 73:32.
 
Bates once again made it a one-goal game when John Murphy hit a shot from about 20 to 25 yards out that eluded Colby keeper Ben Joslin and went into the lower right corner of the net at 79:19.
 
The Bobcats put forth great effort to secure the equalizer, but the Mules were able to hold on. Bates hit the crossbar on a shot with about six minutes to play.
