ROCKPORT — Maine Middle School Golf Invitational: On a cloudy but warm and windless afternoon, nine middle school golf teams met for the second-annual Maine Middle School Invitational. The inaugural edition was hosted last year by Kebo Valley of Bar Harbor. This year, teams came from Greely, Rockland, Camden-Rockport, St. Dom’s Wiscasset, Bucksport and Bar Harbor.

The format for the championship was a four-person scramble. On each hole, all players hit the tee shot. The captain then chose the best or most strategic result, and the three players whose shots were not chosen dropped a ball and hit from there. Once on the green, all players putted. The Captain determined the “batting order.” Each player must have their drive chosen at least once. This format required strategy, chemistry, and generates great excitement around the greens.

There was a tight competition in the nine-hole division with Bar Harbor carding an excellent five-over 39, Bucksport a 40, the Greely all-girls team a 41 and the Bar Harbor ‘B’  a 48.

In the 18-hole division, Rockland shot paar-71 for the win. Greely ‘A’ was second with 73, followed a tie for third at 75 between St. Dom’s and Camden-Rockport.

St. Dom’s, a new team this year coached by Kevin Cullen and captained by Nate Richard, reeled off five straight pars to start and only one bogey on the front nine. Stephanie Rodrigue, a sixth-grader, hit to within 10 feet on the difficult uphill par-3 fifth hole to set up par for the team. The Saints recovered from a double bogey on the 10th to post two bogeys and another spectacular birdie on the 18th.

Justin Keaney and A.J. Parisi joined Richard and Rodrigue in competition for the Saints.
