FARMINGTON — A “Yes on 1” rally to support restoring Election Day voter registration will feature a talk by former Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap. The public is invited to join any or all of the rally events Saturday, Nov. 5.
The “Yes on 1” rally begins at 11 a.m. at the Farmington Park ‘n’ Ride next to Rite Aid, near the bridge at the junction of routes 2, 4 and 27. The group will walk to Meetinghouse Park downtown. After brief remarks at the park at 11:30 by local supporters, the group will walk two blocks around downtown.
At noon, the rally will culminate at Wicked Gelato cafe, 161 Main St. Dunlap will speak on “Election Day Registration: Why Does It Matter?” Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions afterward.
While Dunlap was secretary of state from 2005 to 2011, he was instrumental in increasing voter turnout.
Prior to holding that office, he served four terms in the Maine House of Representatives, representing Old Town. He chaired the Joint Standing Committees on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and Government Oversight and was on the House Standing Committee on Elections.
A “yes” vote on Question 1 of the Nov. 8 referendum ballot would restore Election Day registration, which Maine had for 38 years, until the Legislature repealed the law last spring.
People who want to join the rally can meet Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Park ‘n’ Ride at 11:30 a.m. at Meetinghouse Park, or at noon at Wicked Gelato.
