Dwight Cushman of Hebron has notified the department of inland fisheries and game that he has shot a strange bird, which he believes to be a passenger pigeon, and will have the same mounted and sent to the department. The passenger was once a great pest to Maine crops, but has been supposed to be extinct for the past 20 years and the American Ornithological Society has offered a reward of $1,000 for the finding of a passenger pigeon nest with live birds in it.
50 years ago, 1961
Halloween pranksters were busy in Lewiston last night, their antics ranging from egg tossing to sign stealing.
Police were kept busy chasing down mischief reports.
One of the stickiest incidences took place on the Bates College campus. A car occupied by girls drove by Smith Hall and threw eggs at the building.
25 years ago, 1986
Gerald A. LaPlante of Auburn has been named to the board of the Sisters of Charity Health Systems, Inc.
In this new position LaPlante will be responsible for policy and oversight of the 280 bed d’Youville Pavilion Nursing Home, the Marcotte Congregate and other affiliated corporations owned by the Sisters of Charity.
