I am writing to dispel some mistruths that have been circulating regarding the RSU 16 school budget. It is a fact that the amount of money we spend as a school system is in line with what others in the state are spending. The length of our school year is mandated by the state of Maine.
We have some of the lowest paid teachers and administrators in the area. The majority of staff are not receiving “big” raises. The 1.3 percent increase for teachers is merely a first step in fulfilling our responsibility as an RSU to align contracts in the three towns. Our teachers deserve to be equally compensated for education and years of service.
Teacher contracts that included up to 20 sick days have expired.
Administration is diligently negotiating contracts that are fair for educators and our community. We committed to the process of aligning our educational systems when we voted to become an RSU, which has thus far saved us millions. We need to see this to completion.
Stipends, reduced by $19,000, are not “lucrative.” They compensate professionals for the additional time they contribute their expertise to help create a well-rounded education for our children. Teachers spend an average amount of time instructing our youth when compared with others in this state.
Personally, I want our communities to continue to be respected for the education they provide. If that means at a minimum, paying to fulfill our obligations as an RSU, so be it.
