100 years ago, 1911
The annual class party of the ninth grade of the Webster Grammar school was held in Odd Fellows Hall, Auburn, last evening. The hall was prettily decorated with streamers, banners and sofa pillows. The streamers were of garnet and black, the class colors. Dancing and games were enjoyed by the young folks until a late hour. Pettengill’s orchestra furnished music and Fowles served refreshments.
50 years ago, 1961
The Gold Bond Stamp Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., has signed a long-term lease with Carrigan & Callahan of Lewiston to occupy store facilities at 157-159 Lisbon St.
The signed lease was received here yesterday and the stamp company will take possession of the store Nov. 15.
Interior and exterior alterations at the store are already being made and new fixtures will be installed by the stamp company, and as soon as they arrive the store will be open for display, it was announced.
25 years ago, 1986
Lewiston voters will be asked Tuesday if they want to amend the city charter to allow for an elected school committee for the first time since 1939.
For nearly 50 years, the mayor has appointed seven members to five-year terms on the committee.
Lewiston has remained the only city in Maine with an entirely appointed school board and one of a small number in the country with a non-elected committee.
