PORTPAND, Maine (AP) — The latest generation of full body scanners are coming to the Portland International Jetport.
The Transportation Security Administration says it will begin installing three “advanced imaging technology” scanners at the airport’s new security screening checkpoint in the coming months.
Authorities hope the scanners will ease some passenger privacy concerns.
Some scanners display passengers’ bodies with what some people call too much anatomical detail. Portland’s new ones show each passenger as a generic gingerbread man-like cutout figure.
The machines cost more than $130,000 each.
A TSA spokeswoman tells the Portland Press Herald the new scanners take “a few seconds longer” than traditional metal detectors, but said security wait times will not increase because passengers must still wait while their carry-on luggage is screened.
