AUBURN — John M. Hobbs III, 86, passed away peacefully in Auburn on Friday, Oct. 28.

John was born on Feb. 2, 1925, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., to John Marshall II and Gladys Roundtree Hobbs. He grew up in and around Pittsburgh, Pa.

John was a U.S. Army veteran. A teamster, John drove a truck for a career in Eastern Pennsylvania. He lived for several years in Croydon, Pa. In his time off he enjoyed driving to the New Jersey shore and fishing in what he called the “head boats” on the Atlantic Ocean.

Upon retirement in 1986, John moved to live in Maine with his sister and brother-in-law, Joan (Hobbs) Olmstead and Garfield Olmstead in Gray. John was known to many friends as well as family as “Uncle John.” For many years John enjoyed joining his nephew Bill, his family and their friends for camping on the Maine coast, and boating on Little Sebago Lake.

John is survived by his nephews, Howard, his wife, Beth, and their daughter, Emily, of Westbrook, and Bill, his wife, Cindi, and their two daughters, Ali and Katie, of West Gray.

John will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A special thank you by the family for the care and services provided to John by the staff at Clover Manor Assisted Living and the Hospice House in Auburn.
