DEAR SUN SPOTS: Is there a bank or credit union available in the Lewiston-Auburn area that gives a depositor a regular bank book and makes entrances on the book itself when a deposit, withdrawal or bank transaction needs to be made?

The bank I currently do business with gives you only a small (I would say tiny) slip of paper for a receipt in exchange for any transaction that is made at their bank. I am looking forward to your answer.

You certainly have all the answers, and I truly appreciate your column. Thank you. — Caroline Chapman, Auburn

ANSWER: Sun Spots wishes she had all the answers. It sure would make her job easier and her readers happier.

As for your question, Sun Spots guesses that you are referring to passbook savings. Few people want a passbook any more because they use electronic banking, either online or via an ATM machine. Banks want to encourage those electronic transactions because they reduce the use of tellers and thus the bank’s costs.

Nevertheless, some banks still do offer passbooks for customers who want them, but most don’t heavily advertise them. Sun Spots found only one ad in the yellow pages. But she also contacted a couple of other banks and they said that they still offer passbook savings.

You didn’t say where you bank now, or Sun Spots would have checked with them. She suggests you ask the manager of your bank before switching. They may have account options that will suit your needs. If not, though, you do have choices.

Sun Spots does not feel it would be fair for her to recommend a particular bank. She does advise that you make sure any institution is FDIC-insured and that you understand all the rules governing your new account before you sign up.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You have been helpful tome in the past. I have a close friend with a young son who ate the age of 9 can play a trumpet pretty well. However, he can only play at school as the single parent cannot afford one. On a fixed income, neither can I.

I was in hopes that one of your many readers may have one that they would part with for a reasonable price. I cannot afford much, but I do hope to keep this child’s idle hands busy.

His mother said it was OK for me to try to find him one in the L-A area or not too far beyond. I can be reached at 330-5588 after 6 p.m. Thanks. — Dana, Auburn
