RUMFORD — A 60-minute power outage Thursday night in sections of Rumford, Mexico, Roxbury and Byron was caused by a small tree branch, fire and Central Maine Power Co. officials said.

Heavy rain was falling at the time when the branch fell onto power lines at about 4:45 p.m. along Lincoln Avenue across from Rumford Elementary School.

“A small limb just broke off the tree, come down and killed the power,” Rumford fire Deputy Chief Ben Byam said.

In Rumford, the outage shut down nearby traffic lights at the intersection of Lincoln and Hancock streets.

Byam said firefighters initially directed traffic until they determined that the limb on the power lines wasn’t a hazard, and then returned to the fire station. Police were alerted to the situation.

Byam said a CMP line crew removed the limb. Power was restored by 5:50 p.m., a CMP official in Augusta said.
