DEAR SUN SPOTS: I heard that Bob Marley is coming to the Lewiston-Auburn area. Could you please let me know if you have a date and time? The location as well. Thanks in advance. — Cathy via email

ANSWER: Marley’s schedule of events is online at www.bmarley.com/calendar.php. According to this schedule, it turns out he will be in town on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Lewiston Middle School for Planet Cheer. You can buy tickets at the door ($20) or phone 240-1008. Sun Spots is sorry she didn’t get to your question more quickly to give you time to plan.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Mechanic Falls Historical Society is planning to sponsor “A Music of Note” in early 2012 featuring the century-old pipe organ in the former First Congregational Church of Mechanic Falls.

The society would like to hear from any and all organ players in the region who would like to take part in this program. You may email us at nepesons@myfairpoint.net or write to the Mechanic Falls Historical Society, 64 Elm Street, P.O. Box 222, Mechanic Falls, ME 04256.

The organ was bequeathed to the church in early 1900s by Nelson Valentine in memory of his father, John Valentine, who was instrumental in organizing the church in 1840 and who donated the land on which the church, and now the Historical Society, now stands.

The Mechanic Falls Historical Society is also interested in acquiring copies of the Androscoggin Post, a weekly newspaper published in the 1970s, which covered news and events of communities in Androscoggin County. The society recently came into possession of issues from 1972 and 1973 and would like to learn more about this publication. — Eriks Petersons, president, Mechanic Falls Historical Society

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Responding to Ralph Sylvester’s letter of Nov. 3, I’m happy to report that the Franco-American Collection at USM Lewiston-Auburn College has a lot of information and photographs relating to the Ste-Cecile Boy’s Band (Fanfare Ste-Cecile), as well as many other musicians and bands with Franco connections.

Unfortunately, we have little or nothing on the other groups he mentioned. I’d like to echo Ralph’s sentiment about the importance of saving these items. Like Museum L-A, the Franco-American Collection is also in the business of preserving history, and we’re happy to receive donations of Franco material.

We’re also pleased to cooperate with our partners in the community by pooling our resources. — James Myall, coordinator, USM Franco-American Collection, franco@usm.maine.edu

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Phillips area annual children’s Christmas shopping day will be held on Dec. 10 at the Avon town hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please note this is a change of location as we outgrew the Phillips Community House.

The children may come to shop for gifts for family members, the gifts will be wrapped and tagged. Something new this year will be an area where the children may decorate their own gift bags. An adult “sitter” will be available for adults who accompany the children while they are shopping.

We are now accepting new or gently used items for men, women and children. Also clean stuffed animals for Santa to give out when he arrives.

Shopper helpers are also needed; adults or teens can come and help the children for a short time or all day.

For more information or how to drop off items, please call me. — Nana Haines, grammanan@tds.net, 639-4526
