100 years ago, 1911

Considerable damage was done, most by smoke, at a fire in the quarters of the L. and A. Valet Club, 150 Turner St., Saturday night. The fire was discovered by Ellis Marston, who with several other men were in the rooms of the Auburn Veteran Fire-men’s Association on the second floor.

All heard a sharp explosion and a minute later detected smoke. Mr. Marston investigated and the alarm was rung in from box 221 at Turner and Pleasant streets. The fire was extinguished by the use of chemicals.

50 years ago, 1961

Auburn police are still investigating a complaint by Mrs. Ernest Sullivan of Court Street of larceny of money set out for the milkman. The money had been taken on two successive weeks, Mrs. Sullivan told police. More than $5 is involved in the larcenies.

A lad wearing dark clothing was seen on the porch of the Sullivan home, but made good his escape when an attempt to catch him failed.

25 years ago, 1986

An overheated furnace was the cause of a house fire on Cottage Street early Tuesday morning that left two families homeless and resulted in $35,000 damage, according to Lewiston officials.

Firefighters rushed to 3 Cottage St. at 2:29 a.m., where a blaze that began in the basement was brought under control within 30 minutes, according to Deputy Fire Chief Richard Guay. All five residents of the two-family home escaped without injury.
