If history is any indication, Leavitt won’t complain about its assignment in Saturday’s football state championship tripleheader at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.
Leavitt and Wells will play the late game for the Class B championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:06 p.m.
Maine Principals’ Association officials announced the decision Monday morning.
In the other championship games, Lawrence and Cheverus collide in the Class A final at 11:06 a.m., followed by Yarmouth and Bucksport in Class C at 2:36 p.m.
All six teams were the top seed in their respective regions and are undefeated at 11-0 going into the finals.
Leavitt earned its third consecutive trip to the championship Friday with a dramatic double-overtime victory over Mt. Blue at Libby Field in Turner.
The Hornets rallied to tie the Eastern B final in the fourth quarter and survived an exchange of fumbles in the first overtime.
After a Mt. Blue touchdown in the second OT, Leavitt quarterback Jordan Hersom completed a 10-yard TD pass to Brian Bedard and a shovel pass to Jake Ouellette for the two-point conversion and the 22-21 victory.
“Everybody thought it was going to be a game like that,” Leavitt senior lineman Jake Posik said. “We’re not done yet. There’s plenty left in the tank.”
Leavitt also played the late game in 2009, when it defeated Cape Elizabeth, 35-21, for its third state title in 15 years.
The Hornets faced Mountain Valley at 11 o’clock in 2010 and lost 20-0.
Wells dethroned Mountain Valley with a 10-0 victory in Saturday’s Western B final, intercepting three passes and limiting the Falcons to 106 yards.
“It’s going to be a good game. I’m expecting a good game,” Wells running back Drew Shelley said. “I’m hoping it’s a defensive battle.”
Shelley scored Wells’ only touchdown against Mountain Valley. Joey Spinelli kicked a field goal and picked off the Falcons twice.
The Warriors haven’t played in a state final since 1997. Wells outlasted Belfast, 32-30, at Lewiston High School.
At the time, it was Wells’ third state game appearance in six years.
Leavitt has won 33 straight games against Pine Tree Conference competition. This was the Hornets’ sixth undefeated regular season since 1984.
Game times are determined according to the travel time for each team.
Adult admission to the state championship is $8. Students and senior citizens are $5.
One ticket entitles the holder to watch all three games, but there is no readmission for spectators leaving the stadium without the purchase of a new ticket.
Noisemakers are prohibited at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Fans may not carry backpacks, duffel bags or drinks of any kind through the gates.
Advance tickets are on sale at Leavitt until noon Friday.
