LEWISTON — The Androscoggin Bank Colisee is turning into a night club on weekends.

Box Office Manager Jim Mercier said its kickoff of Nick Knowlton’s Nick@Nite event in the Shipyard Lounge drew 150 people Friday, “which is probably our capacity.” Saturday saw 30 to 50 people.

The Colisee plans to host Knowlton’s Nick@Nite every Friday and Saturday night but will pre-empt it for concerts. There is no cover charge, parking is free and the bar in the lounge is equipped for light food service such as pizza and fries, Mercier said. It opens at 7 p.m.

“We’re excited to see where it goes,” Mercier said.

The lounge is being configured for the night with a stage in the middle, dance floor in front and tables on either side. On opening night, Mercier said he spied people in their 20s and 60s on the dance floor.

“(Knowlton) sings to tracks and some original songs and mixes in up-to-date music,” he said. “We’re not gearing it to one crowd or another and I think that’s what makes it different.”
