PHILLIPS — Fire drove a Dodge Road family from their home Tuesday night and injured a man who was trying to extinguish flames with a garden hose.

The home of Tina and Woodrow Rose at 19 Dodge Road was damaged after a ceiling light on their enclosed porch short-circuited and caught fire. It spread to the center portion of their home, Phillips Fire Chief James Gould said.

Woodrow Rose was sleeping when his wife smelled smoke. He attempted to put the fire out while she led their two sons out of the home, he said. When firefighters arrived at 9:15 p.m., they found Rose with the hose working on the fire.

Rose received burns and cuts to his hands. He was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar ambulance where he was treated and released, Gould said.

The home with the enclosed porch and an ell received fire, smoke and water damage in the center portion of the home after the fire spread from the porch into the home.

Although the fire was put out quickly, firefighters spent about three hours dismantling walls in two bedrooms on the second floor to ensure the fire had not spread through the walls, he said.

About 40 firefighters from Phillips, Salem, Strong and Kingfield helped at the scene.

The home is insured and Gould thought the family would be able to rebuild and live there. They are now staying with family members. An estimate of damage was not available, he said.

The Red Cross was called to help the family. Phillips Fire Department Auxiliary members put together bags containing personal items, clothing and other necessities for the family.
