Carol Celani reads to her first-graders, Jenae Davis, left, and Zoe Basque during shared reading time at Fairview Elementary School in Auburn on Wednesday. Celani is an advocate of using large books with young students in her Shared Reading Success project. “Big books enable kids to see the visuals better and feel like they’re up close,” Celani said. She received about $300 from DonorsChoose.org to buy big books. The nonprofit organization connects donors with public schoolteachers who need classroom materials. Celani is one of 150 Maine teachers who have received donations totaling more than $89,000 through DonorsChoose.org in 2011.
