A Lewiston young man who recently sent money for tickets to the Harvard and Yale football game has had the money returned with a courteous letter explaining that there have been over 10,000 applicants whose money has been returned. He says that he is satisfied since he learned that Andrew Carnegie also had his refused.
50 years ago, 1961
What at first was reported to Auburn police as malicious mischief at the rear of property at 10 Court St., owned by Frank W. Winter, turned out, on investigation by Auburn police, to be a workman removing an oil tank.
It had been reported that someone had cut the legs off an oil tank at that address. When police went to the scene, they found the workman had taken off the legs to facilitate removing the bulky tank.
25 years ago, 1986
Two Lewiston downtown school buildings more than 100 years old should be closed and elementary students redistricted, in the opinion of a city study committee.
However, the committee believes construction of a new public school for inner city children should not be pursued at this time.
The mayor-appointed committee unanimously decided Monday to recommend that the Lewiston School Committee seriously consider closing the downtown Frye and Wallace schools and redistricting grade school students.
