AUBURN — Donald L. Cushman, 83, of Dixfield lost his battle to lung cancer early in the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1928, in Wilton, a son of Walter Lee and Adeline “Laura” (Bickford) Cushman. He attended local schools before enlisting in the U.S. Army in February 1946.

Donald worked at the Rumford Paper Mill for almost 40 years as a supervisor in the Kraft Mill and later years in the wood room.

He loved to hunt and fish with his family and friends. He spent summers at camp, where playing horseshoes was a passion and in the winter it was ice-fishing and family gatherings on the weekends. He also enjoyed gardening with his companion, Eleanor Welch and making pickles for all to enjoy. He was known for his “Donald Duck” quack to all the grandchildren who came to visit. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be missed by all.

He is survived by his three sons, Robert Cushman Sr. and wife, Jennie, of Mexico, Barry Cushman and wife, Sylvia, of Velva, N.D., and Greg Cushman and wife, Brenda, of Mexico; seven grandchildren, Robert Cushman Jr. and wife, Angela, of Dixfield, Michelle Walton and her partner, Lisa, of Rumford, Tracey Cummings and her husband, Aaron, of Mexico, Shawn Cushman and wife, Leah, of Missouri, Tanja Cushman and her companion, Jeff Adam, of North Dakota, Jason Cushman of Auburn and Nathan Cushman and wife, Ciara, of Mexico; 12 great-grandchildren, Samantha Cummings, Katelyn Cummings, Stephanie Cushman, John Calden, Lauren Calden, Ryan Bourett, Chris Bourett, Sarah Bourett, Kolby Cushman, Bailey Cushman, Taylor Cushman and Devin Cushman; and eight siblings, Barbara Wardwell, Marie Thompson, Maxine Givens, Mary Hyde, Kathy Brackley, Jeannette Dunham, Ronald Cushman and Leland Cushman.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Doris (Blodgett) Cushman in 2004; a sister, Roberta Brown; and two great-granddaughters, Rebecca Cushman and Brianna Gunton.
