After 32 years of service, the book used by the Lewiston police for recording the vagrants who have called at the station for lodgings has been discarded, and in its place on the shelves is a fine new book. While city marshals and police men may come and go, the tide of the weary seems to be overflowing, for a good start has been made on the new volume.
50 years ago, 1961
A team of Bates College students won its third round on the nationally televised GE College Bowl yesterday, defeating Brandeis University 210 to 165.
The Bates team, composed of one senior, two sophomores and a freshman, trailed by a wide 155-55 margin at the halfway mark of the contest but overcame the deficit in the second half and then piled up its winning margin in the closing minutes.
25 years ago, 1986
The city of Lewiston will join Auburn in applying for a $100,000 federal grant to examine alternative uses for land along the Androscoggin River, Lewiston councilors decided Tuesday.
Councilors unanimously supported the application to the national Endowment for the Arts to fund a two-part study of the riverfront, seconding approval granted by the Auburn City Council Monday night. The vote was taken without discussion.
