DEAR SUNSPOTS: The STEP program at Lewiston High School supports the basic needs of students and families experiencing homelessness. We are taking on a very different holiday approach this year that will hopefully be easier to manage and better fit students’ needs.

Our “Fill a Stocking for a Friend” project is asking community members and businesses to adopt a student, fill the stocking and grant wishes for students who may otherwise not experience Christmas this year.

We know that requests from agencies such as ours are numerous and all are very important, but we ask that hearts be stretched open just a little bit farther this year for our young folks. Please stop by Lewiston High School and pick up a stocking and a student’s wish list. It is not necessary to get everything on a student’s list; only do what you can.

If you are interested in helping in other ways, we have many ongoing projects that rely on our community’s support as well. Our Store Next Door is in continual need of restocking, and includes groceries, healthy snacks and drinks, backpacks, school supplies, toiletries and hygiene products, clothes, shoes, coats and boots. We also assist with senior portraits, small recognition of birthdays, phone cards, gift cards, USB thumb drives and additionally maintain a money fund for emergency needs.

Please call for more information or to set up a time to visit our “store.” We are also happy to speak to your church, civic group or business to spread the word about the current epidemic of homelessness. At last count, there were more than 1.5 million identified homeless youth in our country, a fact that is disturbing and hopefully gives pause for thought. Thank you. — Mary Seaman, McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison, Lewiston High School, 795-4190, ext. 2214, mseaman@lewistonpublicschools.org

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am responding to the letter about special pants for people with disabilities (July 4). I worked in nursing homes for 25 years and know what she is looking for. It took me a while, but I believe I have come up with a solution.

It really irks me when exorbitant prices are charged because there is a “captive market” for special garments when these people are already dealing with difficult issues.

I have been unable to reach the lady requesting these. Maybe I have the wrong e-mail?

I would like to help and would like to show her or anyone else needing them what I have come up with. I may be emailed, or if you have her contact information, you may give her my phone number. Thank you for all you do. — Karen Short, hockeygramma@yahoo.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots went back through her in box and found a second email address for Pamela, who made that request: pammmm@roadrunner.com. Please let Sun Spots know if you need additional help finding her.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Hope your readers can help! I’m looking for jewelry for my table at the YWCA Holiday Fair on Nov.26. Another gal is looking for treasurers/collectibles for her table.

Items can be dropped off at the YWCA on 130 East Ave. or I can be contacted for pickup. This event is a fundraiser for a vital part of our L-A community. Thanks. — Mary Ann Norcross, norc@gwi.net
