PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The president has signed into law a bill that includes a provision allowing trucks weighing between 80,000 and 100,000 pounds to use all interstate highways in Maine and Vermont.

The U.S. Senate and House approved the measure earlier Thursday, sending it to the president’s desk for signing.

The provision is good for 20 years.

The congressional delegations in both states says allowing the heaviest trucks on all the states’ federal highways gets them off secondary roads where they are a safety hazard.

They say it is also an economic spur that helps both states remain competitive with surrounding states where the 50-ton trucks are already allowed to use interstates.

Police departments and trucking groups across the states supported the measure.
