LEWISTON — Albert S. Farrington, 79, of Jones Street, Auburn, died Thursday, Nov. 24, at d’Youville Pavilion with his family at his side.

He was born in Augusta on Sept. 10, 1932, a son of the late Frank A. and Joan (Sturtevant) Farrington. He was educated in Augusta and graduated from Cony High School Class of 1950, where he was a member of the glee club and played an “end man” in Chizzle Wizzle. Albert then went on to attend Bowdoin College and graduated in 1954. While at Bowdoin he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity, lettered in track and football and received the best actor award for the one-act play category. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army.

Al worked in his younger years at Bell Telephone in Pennsylvania, then moved back to Maine where he worked for many years at Dunlap Insurance. During his career in life insurance, he was the president of The Maine Association of Life Underwriters in 1980 and won the J. Putnam Stevens Award in 1987.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a valued member of the Readers Theater Group, served on the Board of Directors for Community Little Theater and took part in many plays throughout the years. He was a dedicated member of the Auburn Housing Authority, having the boardroom named in his honor.

He was a member of Tranquil Lodge No. 29 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was very proud when both his sons, Alan and Rob, joined him as brothers in the fraternity. He was a member of both Scottish and York Rites and took on many roles in the various degrees. He was a member of the Kora Shrine Temple and was very active in the Chanters unit and took a lot of pride in supporting the Shrine Hospitals.

Ever since he was a boy, he enjoyed spending as much time as possible at Squirrel Island with family and friends. He was the treasurer of The Squirrel Island Historical Society and secretary/treasurer for the Squirrel Island Grandfathers Club for many years, and also took part in the impromptu play readings at the island.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Lu of Auburn; four children, Alan Farrington and his wife, Noreen, of Connecticut, Lynne Geiger of Auburn, Robert Farrington and his wife, Lisa, of Auburn and Dianne Farrington of Rumford; a sister, Martha Mayo and her husband, Arthur, of Bath; a brother, Frank Farrington and his wife, Dare, of Bangor; seven grandchildren, Barbara Nason, Joanna Moran and husband, Will, Andrew Farrington and wife, Lindsay, Rebecca Geiger, Benjamin Geiger and Hannah and Megan Farrington; four great-grandchildren, Elijah Moran, Mason Moran, Jackson Farrington and Dexter Farrington; and many nieces and nephews.
