ORONO — Ashleigh Roberts’ fastbreak layup late in regulation sent Saturday’s Dead River Company Classic championship into overtime, but Roberts and Maine eventually fell to Brown, 61-59, in women’s basketball.
Lauren Clark’s traditional 3-point play with three seconds left to deliver the win for Brown.
Roberts hit a pair of shots from beyond the arc on her way to a game-high 15 points for Maine (2-3). Courtney Anderson of Greene went 4-for-7 from the field and finished with 11 points. Corinne Wellington was a presence in the paint for Maine with nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Brown broke out on an 11-2 run to lead by nine, 19-10, with 7:36 to play in the opening half. With Maine down by 10, Brittany Williams found Anderson for a 3-pointer.
After a Brown jumper, Anderson would battle inside, gaining position and grabbing an offensive board. The freshman guard’s jumper again cut the Brown lead to seven and started a 6-0 run for Maine.
The Black Bears trailed 27-24 at the half.
Maine took its first lead at 43-42 on another 3-pointer by Anderson, courtesy of Rebecca Knight off a Brown turnover. Brown responded with a 10-5 run over the next 4:30, capped off by a trey by Lindsay Nickel.
At the 1:34 mark, Williams started another comeback for Maine with a free throw. The Black Bears would regain possession after a miss by Brown. Wellington pulled down an offensive board and capitalized with a put back.
A pair of free throws by Hannah Passafuime gave Brown a five-point advantage with just 57 seconds remaining.
Anderson drained her third 3-pointer to cut the lead to two. Roberts reeled in a Passafuime miss, sprinted up court and hit the tying layup.
Wellington’s free throw gave Maine a 59-58 lead with 3:20 left in OT.
Roberts and Anderson were named to the All-Tournament team for the Black Bears.
Maine returns to action with a 6 p.m. tipoff in The Pit on Tuesday against Maine Maritime Academy.
