BETHEL — A grievance brought before the SAD 44 board by the Telstar Education Association will go to mediation, Superintendent David Murphy said Monday.

The grievance was first brought to the immediate supervisor, then to him as superintendent, before being denied by a vote of 11-5 by the school board.

Murphy declined to provide details on the matter. He said no date has been set for mediation.

In other matters, SAD 44 learned that it has been approved for a no-interest loan that could, if approved by the board and district voters, renovate Telstar Middle-High School.

Murphy said Monday that $1.3 million would be loaned as part of a Quality School Construction bond related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The district recently completed a study of the 40-year-old school that shows very low heat retention, the need for a new roof and other repairs, and a major updating.

Plans are to issue a request for qualified bidders. The school board will decide whether to approve the project sometime in January.

The renovations, however, will be up to the voters. Murphy said that vote could come in June 2012.

The resignation of Bernie Rice, district buildings grounds/maintenance director for 38 years, was accepted. She plans to retire.
