RUMFORD – Mountain Valley High School honored faculty members who served in the armed forces at a recent school-wide assembly. Student Council co-presidents Cam Welch and Cody Smith led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A vocal group including Sarah Mae Parlin, Jamaica Ford, Morgan Gordon, Victoria Gordon, Heather Durfee, Tiffany Lake, Ashleigh Elaine Milligan and Alexa Fryover sang the National Anthem. The high school band played a medley of service theme songs while that service’s emblem was displayed.

Welch and Smith called four faculty members to the stage. Vice-principal Christopher Decker served in the U. S. Army as did social studies teacher Dan Hodge and special education teacher Andrew Steck. Scott Underhill, education technician, served in the U. S. Navy.

Hodge introduced a brief slide show. “Veteran’s Day used to be a big thing here. I remember my father taking me to the parade. Back then it was called Armistice Day.”

Smith read “Veterans” by Brittany Skinner.

Students in Jeff Bailey’s video production class competed for the honor of having their video shown to the school. The Student Council selected the video submitted by freshman Nick Billings.

Set to “American Soldier” by Toby Keith, the video was a montage of pictures of soldiers with ties to MVHS. Pictures included Bernard Sanabria, MVHS graduate; Corey Provencher, husband of health teacher Kristen Provencher; Rob Rousseau, son of science teacher Pam Rousseau; Wendall Broomhall, grandfather of Spanish teacher Heidi Broomhall; George Affleck, father of alternative education teacher George Affleck; Greg Benjamin, MVHS graduate; and T. J. Sincliar, another graduate. The final scene showed a picture of Buddy McLain, a MVHS graduate who gave the ultimate sacrifice last year. As each picture flashed on the screen, students applauded.

Billings, whose step-father and grandfather served in the military, said, “They risk their lives for us so I put together the video to show appreciation for what they have done.”

Finally, junior Abby Day read a poem.
